| Description |
So, what happened to the early settlers who migrated south into Virginia along the Great Philadelphia Wagon Road in the 18th century? Many traveled to what is now Roanoke, where the road split. Those traveling south continued along the Carolina Road; westward travelers braved the Wilderness Road. But many stayed here, in this beautiful, resource-rich valley.
Explore Park’s Historic Areas feature a unique blend of early western Virginia eras and cultures. Begin your visit at Totero The batteauman busies himself at his camp site.Village, a glimpse into the life of the Native Americans in this region in the 17th century. Next is the Frontier Fort, a fortified homestead common to Virginia’s western frontier in the 18th century. Then it’s on to the 19th Century, complete with farm and farm animals, one-room school, blacksmith shop, working grist mill, and Virginia’s most expansive river culture interpretive site. |
